Dealing with disclosures

In your role, you might receive disclosures of violence, abuse, bullying, harassment or discrimination by students. This section provides information to support safe disclosures, ensure student’s needs are met, whilst thinking about boundaries.

We are committed to creating a community that is actively supportive and opposes discrimination. Making sure that survivors within our community are supported is everyone’s responsibility. When someone tells you that something has happened to them, it can feel daunting. You don’t have to be an expert, and you don’t have to do this alone; the Harassment and Misconduct team are here for you.

Formal Reporting Routes

Talking to the Harassment and Misconduct team or submitting a form through Report + Support does not constitute a formal report. Disclosures allow for students and PGRs to make an informed choice about their next steps.  

Guidance on how to respond

Students and PGRs may a disclosure to any member of staff that they trust. This page will support you to respond with confidence.  It gives guidance on how to provide a safe space for the student and the opportunity for them to make an informed choice about what action to choose to take. We don’t expect you to provide expert advice or long-term support.

Report + Support

Report and Support is an online disclosure tool for members of our community to report incidents of concern that they have witnessed or experienced. Students, staff and visitors of our university can use the platform to share with us that something has happened, either anonymously or providing their contact details.

When to escalate a disclosure

There are specific circumstances where we may be required to escalate details of a student’s circumstances, without their consent. This page provides guidance on when this is appropriate.
