The below international qualification equivalencies are recommended to be used as a guide, with subject-specific grades to be included where appropriate for undergraduate applicants. All content published for each country has been proposed by the University's qualification groups and approved by the Taught Student Recruitment and Portfolio Committee. If you require further context about a particular country's education system or need to verify an awarding institution, please refer to the information provided by the UK National Information Centre (UK ENIC), managed by Ecctis

Undergraduate

Qualification required for undergraduate entry: A minimum of three subjects in Advanced Placement (AP) or SATs (withdrawn in 2021) with grades ranging between 4 and 5 or 650 and 750 respectively. Subject-specific requirements apply.

Combinations of APs and SATs are welcomed; however, where there is a Mathematics A Level requirement, AP Calculus BC will be required.

Dual enrolment courses and associate degrees can be considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants taking an associate degree must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and two years of study, for direct entry into year one. These qualifications may be offered in place of or in combination with APs and SATs. Before making an offer, request the module specifications and, if possible, a provisional transcript so that you can check that the course content is suitable for the intended programme.
Grade equivalencies for dual enrolment courses are as follows:
A* = A+
A = A or A-
B = B+ or B

Applicants may also present the AICE Diploma, which should be considered holistically alongside other qualifications. Please see the AICE Diploma overview for more information about this qualification.

Our continued approach to contextual admissions (i.e. considering dual enrolment or associate degrees) is for US-domiciled applicants only. If you are reviewing applications from students taking US qualifications outside of the US then our standard criteria apply – that is, a minimum of three AP exams.

For an overview of US qualifications, view the slides from the International Office's US admissions webinar on 7 September 2023. If you have any questions, please contact Scarlett Armstrong on s.armstrong@leeds.ac.uk.

The US High School Diploma is not accepted on its own for direct entry to undergraduate courses but, where it has been taken, a minimum GPA of 3.0 is required alongside appropriate APs, SATs or dual enrolment courses as outlined above. For September 2024 entry, the following information has been agreed for schools making qualification comparisons at Level 2 (subject to review for future cycles):
Grade 12 is equivalent to GCSE. In all states, compulsory subject areas include English/languages, maths, science and social studies. The most common scoring system is a GPA out of 4.0:
A/90% = GPA 4.0
B/80% = GPA 3.0
C/70% = GPA 2.0

Individual AP courses noted on a high school transcript for which no final exam has been taken can be accepted as equivalent to GCSE 9-4.
