Welcome and Orientation Services
This section explains the range of services that are available to international students, before and when they arrive in Leeds.
The International Student Office provides support to students arriving in Leeds from outside of the UK. This includes pre-arrival and travel guidance, the Meet and Greet service, international welcome packs, and a range of tours and talks, including welcome talks and the International Student Orientation sessions.
You can download our staff briefing document for an overview of the Welcome and Orientation services planned for September 2019. This document is intended for use by staff, but includes information which you may find useful to include in any of your communication with students.
Publications and website
These publications are sent to taught postgraduate students before they arrive. They are also available to download:
Postgraduate researchers, undergraduate, Language Centre, International Foundation Year, Study Abroad, Exchange and Erasmus+ students receive pre-arrival information by email.
A guide to students first weeks at the University, including information about getting started and details of the events and activities programme is available to students when they arrive. This guide is in the international welcome packs given to new international students after arriving in Leeds, and is also available as a download:
- Your Arrival (for all students) This guide is updated in July for students arriving in September, and in December for students arriving in January.
In January, there is an additional programme for new students arriving for semester 2:
These publications are designed to be used along with our website for international students.
Meet and Greet service
Our free Meet and Greet service runs from Friday 13 - Friday 20 September 2019. Our welcome team can meet students during this time at Leeds Bradford Airport or Leeds Train Station. They will help students get a taxi to their accommodation, assist with any travel issues and answer any other questions they may have. Students can also collect an international welcome pack from our welcome team at these arrival points.
Students regularly talk about what a positive experience it was to be greeted and helped by reassuring, friendly students from our welcome team after a long journey to Leeds. Students should book the Meet and Greet service online at least 72 hours in advance of arriving.
Temporary accommodation can be arranged for international students looking for private-sector accommodation. This can either be on arrival or for those arriving to take part in welcome activities before the start of their permanent accommodation contracts. Find further information on how to book temporary University accommodation.
Welcome talks and welcome packs
Welcome talks, which are held all year round, and the international welcome pack, are an essential part of the international orientation process. All students should visit or contact the International Student Office as soon as they arrive in Leeds to book onto their welcome talk and collect their pack.
If students arrive between 12 - 27 September 2019 they should visit the International Student Information Point in the Michael Sadler Building instead, to collect a welcome pack, sign up for a welcome talk and speak with the welcome team. The welcome team are available during these dates, every day including weekends, from 9am to 5pm.
During a welcome talk, students can find out about registration, local transport, shopping, opening a bank account and other useful information to help them get started. The welcome talk is a separate session from the International Student Orientation sessions and we encourage students to attend both, if possible.
International Student Orientation sessions
In September, the International Student Orientation sessions provide essential information to students about immigration, UK regulations, studying in the UK, cultural adjustment, and the support and opportunities available.
Details of the sessions will be available to students in the Your Arrival guide and on the student site. Students do not need to sign up for these sessions, but are strongly recommended to attend the International Student Orientation session most suitable for them listed below, in addition to their welcome talk. Each session lasts around two hours.
- Thursday 19 September 2019, 10am, Conference Auditorium 1
Taught postgraduates (on Leeds University Business School courses)
- Friday 20 September 2019, 12.30pm, 2pm or 3pm. Students will be allocated to a specific session in their LUBS induction programme, which will include details of the time and location.
Taught postgraduates and postgraduate researchers
- Friday 20 September 2019, 10am, Conference Auditorium 1
Language Centre students who have completed a pre-sessional course at the University do not need to attend one of the International Student Orientation sessions listed above in September.
Study Abroad, Exchange and Erasmus+ orientation sessions
Students will receive information from the Study Abroad team before they arrive about the session they should attend instead of an International Student Orientation session:
- Thursday 19 September 2019, 3pm, Conference Auditorium 1
If students are not able to attend this session, there are also Study Abroad, Exchange and Erasmus+ orientation sessions the following week:
- Tuesday 24 or Friday 27 September 2019, 3pm, Rupert Beckett Lecture Theatre, Michael Sadler Building
International Foundation Year session
International Foundation Year students have a separate session, which they should attend instead of the International Student Orientation session:
- Tuesday 24 September 2019, 3pm, Chemistry West Block Lecture Theatre F
Students will receive more information from the International Foundation Year team before they arrive.
We have a full programme of activities for students arriving in September, and there are also activities to help new students make friends throughout the year, including our Global Community opportunities.
More details about the activities for September 2019 will be available in the Your Arrival guide from July 2019.
