Welcome and Orientation Services

This section explains the range of services that are available to international students, before and when they arrive in Leeds.

The International Student Office provides support to students arriving in Leeds from outside of the UK. This includes pre-arrival and travel guidance, the Meet and Greet service, international welcome packs, and a range of tours and talks, including welcome talks and the International Student Orientation sessions.

Publications and website

These publications are sent to students before they arrive, which will answer many questions for students. They are also available to download:

Postgraduate researchers, Language Centre, International Foundation Year, Study Abroad, Exchange and Erasmus+ students receive pre-arrival information by email.

A guide to students’ first weeks at the University, including information about getting started and details of the events and activities programme is available to students when they arrive. This guide is in the international welcome packs given to new international students after arriving in Leeds, and is also available as a download:

  • Your Arrival (for all students) This guide will be updated in July for students arriving in September, and in December for students arriving in January.

In January, there is an additional programme for new students arriving for semester 2:

These publications are designed to be used along with our website for international students.

Meet and Greet service

Our free Meet and Greet service runs from Friday 8 - Friday 15 September 2017. Our welcome team can meet students during this time at Leeds Bradford Airport or Leeds Train Station. They will help students get a taxi to their accommodation, assist with any travel issues and answer any other questions they may have. Students can also collect an international welcome pack from our welcome team at these arrival points.

Students regularly talk about what a positive experience it was to be greeted and helped by reassuring, friendly students from our welcome team after a long journey to Leeds. Students should book the Meet and Greet service online at least 72 hours in advance of arriving.

Temporary accommodation

Temporary accommodation can be arranged for international students looking for private-sector accommodation. This can either be on arrival or for those arriving to take part in welcome activities before the start of their permanent accommodation contracts. Find further information on how to book temporary University accommodation.

Welcome talks and welcome packs

Welcome talks, which are held all year round, and the international welcome pack, are an essential part of the international orientation process. All students should visit or contact the International Student Office as soon as they arrive in Leeds to book onto their welcome talk and collect their pack.

If students arrive between 9 - 22 September 2017 they should visit the International Student Information Point in the Michael Sadler Building instead, to collect a welcome pack, sign up for a welcome talk and speak with the welcome team. The welcome team are available during these dates, every day including weekends, from 9am to 5pm.

During a welcome talk, students can find out about registration, local transport, shopping, opening a bank account and other useful information to help them get started. The welcome talk is a separate session from the International Student Orientation sessions and we encourage students to attend both, if possible.

International Student Orientation sessions

In September, the International Student Orientation sessions provide essential information to students about immigration, UK regulations, studying in the UK, cultural adjustment, and the support and opportunities available.

Details of the sessions are available to students in the Your Arrival guide and on the student site. Students do not need to sign up for these sessions, but are strongly recommended to attend the International Student Orientation session most suitable for them listed below, in addition to their welcome talk. Each session lasts around two hours.

Undergraduates and Language Centre students preparing for undergraduate level courses:

Taught postgraduates (on Leeds University Business School courses)

Students will be allocated to a specific session in their LUBS induction programme

Taught postgraduates, postgraduate researchers and Language Centre students preparing for postgraduate level courses

Study Abroad, Exchange and Erasmus+ orientation sessions

Students will receive information from the Study Abroad team before they arrive about the session they should attend instead of an International Student Orientation session:

If students are not able to attend this session, there are also Study Abroad, Exchange and Erasmus+ orientation sessions at 3pm on Tuesday 19 or Friday 22 September 2017, Rupert Beckett Lecture Theatre, Michael Sadler Building.

International Foundation Year session

International Foundation Year students have a session on Tuesday 19 September, which they should attend instead of the International Student Orientation session. Students will receive more information from the International Foundation Year team before they arrive.

Social activities

We have a full programme of activities for students arriving in September, and there are also activities to help new students make friends throughout the year, including our Global Community opportunities.

More details about the activities for September 2017 will be available in the Your Arrival guide from July 2017.
