Research Skills Training & Development (RST&D) Academic Steering Group

A refreshed programme and mode of delivery for career development and skills training for postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers has been developed and agreed for the University. 

All training and coordination staff are employed by the University, but with specific links to faculties, with the team working in support of both faculty-based and central training.  Training programmes will be delivered via three ‘Faculty Hubs’ supported by a fourth hub in the Staff & Departmental Development Unit.

The Research Skills Training & Development Academic Steering Group will provide academic leadership and accountability for the delivery of career development and skills training at the University, and provide strategic direction and oversight. The Steering Group will undertake to achieve the objectives listed below.

Programme Management and Quality Assurance

Oversee career development and skills training to ensure coherence and complementarity in programme delivery and consistency of experience across the hubs and faculties, and to avoid inefficient duplication

Provide a means of assuring and enhancing quality of training by:
 (a) annually reviewing career development and skills training provision
 (b) evaluating the benefits and impact of career development and skills training against key performance indicators
 (c) disseminating and promoting good practice throughout the University
 (d) monitoring participation and feedback

Monitor implementation of staff resources across the faculties and services, recommending changes as appropriate, e.g. if distribution of resource demand between the hubs changes

Consult with faculties, via Steering Group representatives and training providers, to ensure delivery of appropriate and high-quality career development and skills training

Work with doctoral training centres and other collaborative training awards to enhance the scope, quality and effectiveness of research training at the university

To take forward and monitor the implementation of the Concordat, Employment Policy for Researchers and the European HR Excellence in Research Award to support the Career Development of Researchers

Input to University reports to RCUK that refer to postdoctoral and postgraduate research training matters and make recommendations to Research and Innovation Board and Graduate Board.

Strategic development

Promote and further develop a strategic approach to the development of career development and skills training for postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers

Make recommendations to Graduate Board and Research & Innovation Board on University strategy and policy for career development and skills training.

Financial management

Review, approve, and monitor the budget for career development and skills training, ensuring control of incomeandexpenditure within an agreed financial plan

Decide allocation of an annual budget to each faculty hub and relevant central service.

Communication

Identify and maintain appropriate mechanisms for consultation and communication with stakeholders, internal and external, to the University, Faculty Graduate School Committees, Faculty Research & Innovation Committees, Faculty Student Education Committees, the Leeds University Union, RCUK, and Vitae

Provide and disseminate intelligence on research training and related activities from the Research Councils and other stakeholders.
